It’s that time of year again when everyone is in the holiday spirit, which means we are nicer than usual. It’s easy around the holidays to be more positive, giving and encouraging toward others because it seems there is some magical spell put on all of us. You may find yourself in good spirits at work, playing your Christmas tunes (with coffee in hand, of course) and spreading Christmas cheer, but what about the rest of the year?
Do you find yourself getting caught up in the stress of your everyday meetings and tasks? It can be difficult at times to dig yourself out from under those haunting piles of papers and long lists of emails. It is important to keep this one thing in mind: Attitude is everything. Everyone has beyond stressful days where you are stretched so thin you don’t think you could add another task on your plate. No matter what kind of day you are having, keep in mind that your attitude affects those around you, especially co-workers.
In any work environment, you can make a difference by doing these three things:
Smile! Even if you don’t feel like it – turn that frown upside down and force yourself to smile. By doing this, you can trick your mind into thinking you truly are happy, which can result in lifting some of that stress off of your shoulders. This will make you more productive.
Compliment others. It never hurt anyone to receive a compliment. Take a moment to tell your co-workers how much you appreciate them. It will give them a boost of confidence and it will make you feel good. When you are so focused on all of the things you have to do, you only think about yourself and your to-do list. Get your mind off of what you are doing and think about your co-workers who also have a huge workload. Let them know their hard work is recognized.
Be positive. It might be difficult at times to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but sometimes work is hard and that’s the reality. Keep your head up and push through. Take one task at a time and focus on doing the best you can. Getting down on yourself and worrying about your workload will put you behind. Think of at least one positive thing you love about your job (or anything in your life) and hold onto it. Positivity is contagious, so spread it around the office! You will be surprised at how much more work will get done when you put yourself in a positive mindset.
No matter what may be on your plate this holiday season, make an effort to keep a positive attitude at work. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish.
